This is pretty much every job I ever had... except for when I worked tech support, and none of my coworkers were impressed that I could freeze a pane in Excel. I felt much less special then. The people who I tech-supported were impressed, but it seemed hollow :(

What you're doing now is magic. Anything else is just going to be a cheap substitute for magic.

that happened to me! someone asked me to create a database of information that had not previously been collected anywhere, without giving me the means/resources to go out and research/collect it myself - because "well we figured you were young and resourceful and you could figure it out."

Yeah, this working for the technology resistant elderly phenomenon can work horribly in reverse. Once they've become used to your magic, they become confident that nothing, no matter how ridiculous can be crammed through your magic-hole and come out better than they imagined.

And when you fail them...oh how frustrated they are that their magic box has become dysfunctional.

Well, where I come from, we don't call it a magic hole. No sir. We call it a do-do hole, or an a-hole, depending on the context.

at least when you work for a company where you're not supposed to know how to do that, anyway

The problem with being proficient with anything in a work enviroment is that you are then THAT guy/gal to go to for help, whenever anything goes wrong. Best to feign ignorance.

Me? I'm naturally ignorant.

During the summer between HS & college (1991), I had a job working at Mobil Oil. In the department I was working, they had one computer. It ran DOS and had DBase or maybe Paradox on it. Paradox, I think. We were inventorying boxes of documents by hand and keeping written records of them, so I decided to create a database to keep track of them instead. It was as if I had made the Statue of Liberty disappear.
