Ugh, verizon. Trying to get away from them is horrible. I still have an outstanding balance I refuse to pay.

if i'd known from the beginning there was a secret number to call to get someone who could actually help me, this would have simplified the process greatly! ryan pointed me to the consumerist, which led to me calling random numbers until someone could tell me it.

basically terrible until you get a hold of their "executive customer support assistants" who actually do things. i don't think i will be getting another cell phone plan for many years.

What is it about cell phone ocmpanies that makes them act like complete jerks? Sprint has screwed me over so many times I've lost count. The most recent escapades happened because when they merged with Nextel they decided it would be a good idea to delete my account, which made getting a new phone a Herculean chore. I don't even want to get into the hidden fees, blatant lying, and retarded customer service.

But at least they didn't screw me over like my friend got screwed over... The company he was with merged with another company. He didn't think the merger would affect him, and because his account was on autopay and he kept having money debited from his account, he figured he was fine. However, he was still technically paying his old company when he actually had to be paying the new company that suddenly was in charge of his account. The first company was taking his money and depositing it, but the second company (keep in mind they are the same company) was not crediting it to his phone bill. He only found out about it because they shut off his phone for nonpayment... And when he pointed out that he had been paying them all this time and could prove it, they still wanted him to pay late fees on the "delinquent" account.

a lot of the problem is that the people working the phones are not made aware of how their company works, would be powerless to do anything helpful even if they knew what they could do, and often are rewarded more for getting you off the phone than for taking care of your problem. these are some of the problems with trying to communicate with a corporation!

How confusing and dreadful! When I lost my cell phone a few years ago, someone had already made several 900 number calls before it was turned off. Somehow, these calls came from Columbus, which is odd, because I have never lived there. The cell phone company I was with at the time decided that not being from Columbus meant I didn't have to pay (most) of the bill, which was nice.

I hope everything gets settled with your bank.

i am not looking forward to the bank stuff, because these charges are something like 9 months old now, and i am going to be getting a lot of resistance. i should probably try and find some kind of executive customer service within my bank right off the bat.

I learned about this the hard way when my brother (on our family cell phone plan) left his phone in a taxi and someone used it to call Africa ($45). My brother canceled the phone the next day, but I was really annoyed at T-mobile.

After much complaining to them about it, I searched the web and discovered that it's the same situation at every cell phone company! One woman in California got a bill for $26,000. I also heard a This American Life story about a woman owing MCI thousands of dollars for a call that she didn't make - she was giving birth at the time and had the documents to prove it. Eventually Ira Glass had to get on the phone and record the call and straighten things out.

All you can do is alert the media and complain to your congressmen. It's really fucking annoying.

My mother's purse was stolen, with her cell phone in it. She called Rogers to see if any calls had been made, and they said "Well, I guess you'll be able to see that on your next bill" and hung up on her. Good times.

God don't I know it. I was with TMobile and they wouldn't keep records of your text messages. One month they tried to tell me I sent 1500 in an entire month. When you break that down, that's 50 a day for 30 days. I got to the point of exasperation trying to tell them how that was not possible and they needed to prove it or else I won't pay.

:/ I gave up though, and paid. Like a loser.

50 a day for 30 days is possible for me hahah which is why my husband and I have unlimited texting. XD

Luckily T-Mobile hasn't done anything wonky to me -yet-, though AT&T told me back in the day I had unlimited nights and weekends (my plan was 39.99/mo) and once, I got my bill and it was $459. We called them and they were like, your nights and weekends were promotional and expired on _______, so you got charged for all those calls you made and the only way to not have to pay the bill is to sign another 2 year contract.

unfortunately the phone was in my dad's name and he didn't have the 500 to pay them so he had to sign their lame contract. :(

When my parents moved into their new townhouse, nobody had connected the phone lines, so they had to get cell phones to use until the phone lines were taken care of. They got cell phones from Verizon, but couldn't get a cell phone signal in the house. They called to complain/cancel their service, and were told that they'd signed a contract, and had no choice but to pay it, even though the phones were useless.

Man, this really makes me rethink getting another cell phone. I got rid of mine in 2003, and I've never gone back.

this just in!
john refuses to update pictures for sad children...
...until he learns to draw a tree.

p.s. i think hell might be something like dealing with a giant corporation and constantly having to file, and refile, and file again. basically just the grind of bureaucracy.

i had an idea once where basically, hell was working in a call center. and everyone who called to complain and bitch to people, were talking to someone in hell, who was just trying to do their job and go home....

..except they never got to go home.

This is especially funny because I went through almost an IDENTICAL situation just resolved last week where they charged me for HOURS of internet service ("Are you sure someone at a party didn't use your phone?"), some song called "Ride It Low" and a song from A Perfect Circle. Also Tetris. The number of ways they tried to convince me that I LOVED that music, was an internet fanatic, and surely was to blame was appalling. I FEEL YA JOHN
