This is the point where a French dialogue would play the "wah wah wah wahhhhhh" sound.

This is basically me when I am in Mexico. Except I use a lot more hand gestures.

I took several years of spanish in school along with a few years of german. I can successfully understand the subtext. I forget what quiera means.

That's pretty much me whenever I try to remember any German or Japanese I've studied ^_^; I just cannot get my mind into another language's mode when I need to do.

I'm going to Berlin this weekend. I've not spoken any German for about ten years.

I'm expecting to get as far as "kann ich ein... um..."

(though in my cartoon, the other party will step in and speak English better than I can.)

I do this in english sometimes. It's my first (and only fluent) language though, so I have no excuse.

I work with a bunch of people almost all of whom speak Spanish, and of those there are varying degrees of English fluency. Basically, if their English is better than my Spanish, we talk in English, and vice versa. Talking to the ones whose English is worse than my Spanish is full of stumbling and awkward pauses, often due to my 100% lack of technical vocabulary relevant to my job.

Hand gestures sometimes help. This reminds me of when I was trying to give a Spanish family directions to the bathroom when I worked at Target. Not a good time. You'd think high school Spanish would've taught me something, but... no.

I love this comic.

aaand have you heard the mexican band "descartes a kant"? they're from my town and are kind of good. In a schizophrenic way.
